Ice Hotels

A hotel rebuilt from river ice every winter, in the far north of Sweden.

Icehotel

Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

Every winter the hotel is built again. Blocks of ice cut from the Torne River are carved into rooms, halls and a chapel, and every spring the building melts back into the river.

Artists apply each year to design the art suites, so no two seasons look alike. Guests sleep on ice beds with reindeer hides and thermal sleeping bags, at a few degrees below zero.

A permanent part of the hotel stays open all year. It has warm rooms and ice suites kept cold by solar-powered cooling. Jukkasjärvi lies about 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, near Kiruna airport, and winter nights here often bring the northern lights.
